    Question

I'm about to take the plunge and replace my old VHS-C camera.

I've been eyeing the Sony Digital-8 DCR-TRV320 for a while and I think it's the one I'm going to go for. Anyone on this forum used one, have any horror/success stories they want to share, before I pay out.

I have used this camera for home video use, but it is very limited if you want to use it to make professional video.

It has many nice features like digital effects, night lighting, 16:9 frame, firewire, cassette memory and every other bell and whistle you can imagine.

The picture is a lower resolution than a professional camera and has only 1/4 in. CCD (charge coupled device). You will also be limited with audio.

If it's for home videos, go for it. If it is for professional use, check out panasonics DVPRO line or Sony's DSR digital cameras. They are a little more, but worth it.

I've had a quick look at the DVPro line from Panasonic. Very nice cameras, but a bit high for my price range, even the miniDV version was $2.5K. Also, I'd have to search for a UK supplier as import costs would be pretty high from the US.

The DCR are good as well. Again, if I had the money I'd consider them.

But the picture of the Digital-8 I am looking at is good enough at the moment. I am still experimenting with the feel of my shooting, so I'm not producing anything for professional release at the moment.

Audio wise, I was intended to record separately with a miniDisc machine hooked to a decent mic. I can link the audio back with the image when I edit it in Premiere.

Thanks for pointing our those two makes of camera though. Definitely appearing on my wishlist now. Looked at one of the pro level panasonics and dreamed of having $25K to buy it.

I've got a Sony TRV110 Digital 8 camcorder. And I'm very impressed with. I cannot tell them difference in picture quality between this and other single chip Mini-DV camcorders.
Of course it wouldn't be suitable for "pro" use but would be perfectly adequate for experimenting with.
